Each Dawn I Die - Journalist Cagney is framed, and sent to the prison where he meets a tough inmate, Raft. There is excellent acting all around. Cagney hits a white-hot peak with his role, however the last half of movie gets to be outrageously implausible. Music score by Max Steiner. Cast includes James Cagney, George Raft, George Bancroft, Jane Bryan, Maxie Rosenbloom, Stanley Ridges, Louis Jean Heydt, Abner Biberman, John Wray, Victor Jory, and Thurston Chamber. No Man of Her Own - Pompous drama based on Cornell Woolrich tale of Helen Ferguson (Stanwyck) assuming another's identity and becoming part of a fmaily. Later in the movie she is being blackmailed by her ex-boyfriend. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, John Lund, Jane Cowl, Phyllis Thaxter, and Richard Denning. (98 minutes, 1950)
The General Died at Dawn - Fine performance of Oriental intrigue, with mercenary Cooper falling in love with foreign agent Carroll when fighting menacing warlord Tamiroff. Cast Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, Akim Tamiroff, Dudley Digges, Porter Chamber, and William Frawley. (97 minutes, 1936)
After Life - This is a superbly crafted tale of case workers at a train station between the heavens who assist the recently departed to decide on a lone moment from their pasts to live within evermore. This is a quiet, poetic assessment of life, death, and memory, filled with soft humor and blessedly free of some feel-good platitudes. Cast includes Aarata, Erika Oda, Susuma Terajirna, Taketoshi Naito, Kyoko Kagawa, Kei Tani, Takashi Naito, and Yusuke lseya. (118 minutes, 1998)
The Leading Man - British backstage show romance in regards to an American film megastar who seduces a playwright's depressed wife and his leading-woman mistress. When it might not make up its mind whether it's a comedy tirade or a light thriller, it's still exceedingly funny stuff. Bon Jovi is excellent as the impetuous, unethical Yankee, and Galiena and Newton are attractive as the females trapped in his web. Cast includes Jon Bon Jovi, Anna Galiena, Lambert Wilson, Thandie Newton, Barry Humphries, and David Warner. (100 minutes, 1997)
Pretty Woman - A accidental meeting of a street prostitute and a callous and exceedingly rich businessman leads to a unique proposition. He employs her for the week, to attend some functions with him as an escort. He has no indication what he has gotten himself into. Starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere.
