The Red Violin: Multi-episode film follows the destiny of a hexed violin from 17th-century Italy to 18th century Vienna, 19th century England, 20th-century China and present day Montreal. The tales are mainly downbeat and or aggravating, and the finish up part with appraiser Jackson is difficult to swallow. Colorful locales and enthralling premises sustain limited interest all the way through. Cast includes Carlo Cecchi, Irene Grazioli, Jean-Luc Bideau, Jason Flemyng, Greta Scacchi, Sylvia Chang, Samuel L. Jackson, Colm Feore, Monique Mercure, Don McKellar, and Sandra Oh. (131 minutes, 1998)
The Indian Fighter: Stimulating account of Douglas leading wagon train through rampaging Indian nation. A powerful western with a strong cast. Cast includes Kirk Douglas, Walter Matthau, Elsa Martinelli, Walter Abel, and Lon Chaney. (88 minutes, 1955)
Barfly: Surprisingly entertaining photograph of L.A. lowlife, and boozy, recklessly macho author Henry Chinaski, played with bravado by Rourke. Dunaway is magnificent as his alcoholic soul-mate. Based on the auto-biographical writings of cult top choice Charles Bukowski, who might be noticed on one of the bar stools. Cast includes Mickey Rourke, Faye Dunaway, Alice Krige, Jack Nance, J.C. Quinn, and Frank Stallone. (97 minutes, 1987)
Luther: Authentic however placid American Film Theatre re-creation of John Osborne's play in regards to Martin Luther (Keach), leader of the Lutheran Reformation. Cast includes Stacy Keach, Patrick Magee, Hugh Griffith, Robert Stephens, Alan Badel, and Judi Dench. (112 minutes, 1973)
Signs of Life: A generation's old boat making business in Maine closes its doors, and the workers, youthful and old, who've exhausted their lives there, try to decide out what to do next. Cast includes Arthur Kennedy, Kevin J. O'Connor, Vincent Phillip Onofrio, Michael Lewis, Fellow Bridges, Kate Reid, Kathy Bates, Mary-Louise Parker, and Georgia Engei. (91 minutes, 1989)
Slave Girl: Story of adventure with a sinister man keeping Americans captive. This film should not to be taken seriously (there's even a speaking camel). Cast includes Yvonne De Carlo, George Brent, Broderick Crawford, Albert Dekker, Lois Collier, Andy Devine, and Arthur Treacher. (80 minutes, 1947)
A Life of Her Own: Turner is at the hub of 3-way romance leading to heartbreak for all. Dvorak wraps it up with her master depiction of an aging model. Cast includes Lana Turner, Ray MillaItd, Tom Ewell, Louis Calhern, Ann Dvornk, Margaret Phillips, Jean Hagen, Barry Sullivan, and Phyllis Kirk. (108 minutes, 1950)
Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton's rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)
Slaughter's Big Rip-off: A murderer is still playing games with the Mob in this dull action flick. McMahon gives more effort to his role as the mob boss than it merits. Cast includes Jim Brown, Ed McMahon, Brock Peters, Don Stroud, Gloria Hendry, Dick Anthony Williams, and Art Metrano. (93 minutes, 1973)
