Easy to figure out Oasis is playing when the guitar starts to play on Wonderwall. Oasis is a British rock band that formed in 1991, maybe a little sooner, in Manchester. The name of the band was originally The Rain. The band members were Tony McCaroll, drummer, Paul McGuigan, playing the bass, Paul Arthurs on the guitar, and Liam Gallagher who mainly sang and played the tambourine every now and then. Now, you should know that Liam Gallagher has a brother named Joel who is a solid songwriter. He has written some amazing songs. However, probably because it was his little brother's band, he just wasn't too interested in what the band was doing. Eventually, as time passes, he wants his brother's band to work on and play some of his songs. You see, Noel basically called the band and told them "I want your band to play my songs. I also want to be your band's only songwriter".

So, they took him on because they needed material and the material they were coming up with was sub standard. That was for sure. Now, again, so Noel is a class A song writer, great tunes and once he joined the band, they became a hit machine. They turned out eight number one singles in the UK and seven number one albums, whole kinds of awards, Q awards, MTV, Europe music awards. So, and in 2007, they got one of the best albums of the last thirty years. The BBC radio listeners voted and the band was nominated for a few Grammies. As of last year, 2009, Oasis has sold more than 30 million records. They have been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the longest 10 UK chart run by a band. This was because they had 22 consecutive top 10 hits. That is unheard of. Not even the Beatles had that many. Of course the band has compared themselves to the Beatles, believing they would be the next Beatles. It is considered interesting by many when a band talks about this, but rarely does one come along and proclaim that they'll be the next Beatles. Of course, the record labels, the critics, BMG, Sony, they all think that their hot new band is the one that will be the next Beatles. Folk, this is never going to happen. There was a certain thing going on in history that made it possible for the Beatles to become the Beatles. So anyway, the band signed to a label, Creation Records and started putting out their early stuff. Definitely Maybe. This came a little after their early hits. Really, I want to talk mainly about how the song, Wonderwall is really a take off of the Beatles. George Harrisons was the first of the Beatles to put out a solo album. It was the soundtrack to a movie called Wonderwall. Wonderwall Music with an album called Wonderwall Music. Well. It was really a bunch of ambient type stuff that was not anywhere close to being ready for the Beatles label. However, it was released under the Apple label, likely because Capital, EMI didn't think it would ever sell and wanted nothing to do with it. At least George had more musical content. John were a little bit more like revolutionized and his other experimental song What's the New Mary Jane that didn't show up, that wasn't...They never showed up on official release. They finally put up an edited version, one of the edited versions on it on Beatles Anthology three ad lib. So, the song Wonderwall, getting back to Oasis, as I'm wandering off here in a daze. Whoops! Just a minute, my notes are disappearing. The band of course made appearances on MTV unplugged. They played on World Festival Hall but they also always have bickering between the brothers and it seems like now the plug has been pulled finally. And for every...As far as everybody else is concern, they are done. But Noel Gallagher is off and doing his own thing, writing his own stuff, playing...He spent some time playing with Zac Starkey, Ringo's son. So another Beatles connection between Oasis and a member of the Beatles. So, the album, by the way, that Wonderwall was from came out in 1995. It is called "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?". It just rode, rode the charts for a while, because it had a lot of singles: "Some Might Say, " "Roll With It, " of course, "Wonderwall, " "Don't Look Back in Anger." Those were all big. They were, again, much bigger in the UK, in Britain, than they were in the United States. But, they did have two big hits in the US. Aside from "Wonderwall, " "Champagne Supernova" was another one that became a radio staple for a while, and even a song I taught to a lot of people in the middle and late 1990s, when music was kind of sketchy and had entered a sort of void period at that point, anyway. There were some interesting complaints, or at least maybe critical comments about especially a lot of the stuff from "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?". Writer John Harris, in his article called "Britpop!: Cool Britannia and the Spectacular Demise of English Rock, " compares a lot of the songs and themes from that album directly to other songs. There were some rather interesting complaints or should I say critical comments about a lot of the stuff, especially from "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?" In an article, "Britpop!: Cool Britannia and the Spectacular Demise of English Rock, " by writer John Harris, he compares many of the themes and songs from the album directly to some other songs. Harris cites Gary Glitter's "Hello, Hello, I'm Back Again" as one song that has clearly had stuff stolen from it. The song, Don't Look Back in Anger, is an awful lot like John Lennon's Imagine. The song Morning Glory is very similar The One I Love, by R.E.M. Because many of the songs had very close resemblances to current and older pop songs, it is kind of hard to give these guys much credit for being original. However, this happens a lot with this style of Brit pop. In fact, there was generally a lot of this happening in the entire music industry. There weren't too many truly innovative, creative ideas. But remember, Oasis claimed to be even better than the Beatles, just like Michael Stipe. A few days ago, one of my students and I were having a conversation and were talking about self promoters. We were talking about how at one point during an interview, Michael Stipe from R.E.M. We were talking about some of the really great R.E.M songs like Stand and Losing My Religion. Back to Michael Stipe and the interview. At one point during an interview he actually said that Beatles stuff sounded like "elevator music". Well, the interviewer, toward the end, said that had it not been for this elevator music as well as the creators of the elevator music, Michael Stipe himself would have had to take the stairs throughout his whole life. It seems a bit dicey to be to try to compare yourself to a master. One more thing I want to cover is some of the other songs on the Morning Glory album. The album opened with Hello. Gary Glitter even got the credit for that one because it was undoubtedly taken. It was nearly the cover of his album. Anyway, "Roll With It" was next, followed by "Wonderwall" and then "Don't Look Back in Anger". This really did sound a lot like "Imagine". There we go. I had to get "Imagine" back into my head. They also had "Hey Now!" A song called "Untitled". It's always really, really creative and clever to name something "Untitled." One of my favorite titles. I have a lot of songs that are still untitled. "Some Might Say" was followed by "She's Electric, " and then "Morning Glory, " and ended with a couple of other tunes, Another "Untitled." So, they gave these untitled songs subtitles. This one was called "The Swamp Song." The other one was called "The Swamp Song." Part 1, part 2. Or, "Excerpt 1" and "Excerpt 2." And, then it ended with "Champagne Supernova." I had a note here that these two tracks, the Swamp tracks, were officially "Untitled, " but it's mostly just because there were some blank spots in the tapes, especially the ones that were produced in Mexico. There was a bonus track on the vinyl edition. Vinyl had kind of died about 10 years before, but it was still hanging around a little bit. So, they did have an extra song on there, "Bonehead's Bank Holiday." If you're ever looking for "Bonehead's Bank Holiday" by Oasis, and you know it's from the "Morning Glory" period, you've got to find it on the vinyl. There's a lot to be said in general for tracking down vinyl. I'm not going to go into this right now, but we could debate for hours the relative pluses and minuses of analog sound, versus the digital sound of CDs. CDs have gotten much, much better than they were in 1985, evidenced by the fact that finally, The Beatles' albums have been released in remastered versions and are now sounding almost as good as the vinyl. But, just the evolution of things is fascinating now, as we are into the second decade of the 21st century, that things are looking back to vintage sounds that we could only get on vinyl. That is my last couple of thoughts on these guys. So, if you're really interested in Oasis, I encourage you to check out some of their many interesting albums.Their songs are pretty fun to play. But, if you can play half a dozen Beatles songs, I guarantee you could play all the Oasis songs, because they're a little bit simpler.
